| The wines of the Rhone
area are delicious by any standards. While not as well known as
their relatives in the Bordeaux region, they are nonetheless rich,
complex and incredibly pleasing to the palate. Cotes du Rhone,
Cotes du Rhone Villages, and the world famous Chateauneuf du Pape are
the best known, but equally good are the local wines, such as the Cotes
du Ventoux, Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Cairannes, and others. La
Lavande is strategically situated on the Route du Vins, and in addition
to hosting several vineyards right in the village, you can literally go
in almost any direction from the village and hit upon small vineyard,
cooperatives and large producers that offer wine tastings, or
degustation. Some cooperatives dispense wine directly out of
barrels using pumps similar to our gas pumps. Locals bring their
Vracs (plastic jugs) to be filled, pump them full of their
favorite table wine, and bring it home with them. In the summer,
there is nothing quite as refreshing as a good chilled Rose with your
mid day meal. If you want to sample some of the twenty or so
vignerons in Sarrians proper, you can print off our very own
Sarrians Wine Route
and spend a wonderful couple of days just wandering the back roads and
sampling the wines. Below are some suggestions for
wine tasting in the area. Bon appetit. |
